Get Over It (2001)
Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Ben Foster
Director: Tommy O'Haver
Synopsis: Lively teenage romantic comedy about a high school senior using the school's musical production of A Midsummer Night's Dream and the help of his best friend's little sister to win back his longtime girlfriend. (Miramax)
Runtime: 90 minutes
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Genres: Comedy, Romance

Reviews:
2.5 of 4 by James Berardinelli
Unfortunately, in the midst of this innovation, O'Haver has lost track of the most basic element necessary in a formula romance: chemistry. Rule #1 for motion pictures of this sort - the leads have to connect; in Get Over It, they never really do. The problem is that only the female lead, Kelly (Kirsten Dunst), is presented as a legitimate character. Everyone else, including the male protagonist, Berke (Ben Foster), is a caricature, frequently forced into cartoonish situations where they must endure the indignities of being subjected to slapstick humor. The result is that many of the relationships, including the key one between Kelly and Berke, lack vitality. more

Get Over It is a typical teen comedy which Miramax released without giving an advanced screening to critics. Normally this would be a sure sign that the movie going public will have no problem obeying the command of the title. Surprisingly, Get Over It has enough pleasant verve and high-spirited energy that we might find the film lingering in our memories a bit longer than the other recent examples of its genre. more

Perfume (2000)
Starring:
Carmen Electra, Omar Epps
Director: Michael Rymer
Synopsis: The highs and extreme lows of two women — business partners whose careers turn out quite differently — and a series of the characters they interact with in the NYC fashion industry.
Runtime: 106 minutes
MPAA Rating: R - For language and brief nudity.
Genre: Drama

The world of fashion is something I’ve never totally understood. This might partly explain why I had such a hard time following the film’s seemingly dozens of characters and their woe-is-me complaints. But that shouldn’t matter. The story should flow in such a way that all viewers, no matter their background, can connect with the characters. Otherwise, it’s just an inside joke that may please a small handful of fashion aficionados and throw off the masses. I guess my invitation got lost because I never felt I was in on any of the intertwining plots. more

There are several different stories being spun in Perfume. One is of Roberta (Rita Wilson), whose independent fashion design business is floundering, due in no small part to its star designer Camille (Leslie Mann) jumping ship. Camille is being courted by a large, faceless corporation and in a more literal sense by one of its employees, Jamie (Jeff Goldblum). There is also renowned photographer Anthony (Jared Harris), who popularized the heroin chic look some years ago but has fallen into somewhat of a rut. His girlfriend, who abandoned the industry, is displeased with the state of their relationship, and Anthony himself is running the risk of being fired by a fashion magazine run by tenacious editor Janice Crawford (Joanne Baron). She, meanwhile, finds herself reacquainted with a cornrowed, Raggedy Ann-ish daughter (Michelle Williams) that she hasn't seen hide nor hair of in twelve years, and Halley wants no part of Mum Janice's world of idealized beauty. Finally, there's a terminally ill Italian fashion designer (Paul Sorvino) who attempts to hide his sickness from his family. His son Mario is eager to enter the fashion industry and make a name for himself with an emphasis on urban clothing. His father, however, doesn't embrace hip-hop culture in quite the same way, nor does the everspreading cancer offer him the opportunity to do so. more

Scary Movie (2000)
Starring:
Shannon Elizabeth, Cheri Oteri, Carmen Electra
Director: Keenen Ivory Wayans
Synopsis: Slasher spoof follows group of silly pretty (or pretty silly, depending on your viewpoint) teens as they're messily hacked up by a masked maniac.
Runtime: 88 minutes
MPAA Rating: R
Genres: Comedy, Horror

Reviews:
Rated 2.5 out of 4 by Reel.com (Robert Payne)
When it comes to pushing the envelope in comedy, the Farrelly brothers have nothing on those badass Wayans. In fact, the sprinkling of sight gags running through Me, Myself & Irene makes for a mild skirmish compared to the all-out assault of visual humor that inhabit Scary Movie more

Graded B by Entertainment Weekly (Lisa Schwarzbaum)
The only thing scary about Scary Movie is the blithe voraciousness with which Dimension Films, Miramax's hard- charging anti arthouse division, is willing to eat its own children to disgorge a box office hit. The same folks who proudly sponsored ''Scream'' (funny), ''Scream 2'' (even more clever), and ''Scream 3'' (relatively funny but enough's enough) now back a cheerfully gross, dirty, funny, messy parody that cannibalizes what was already a cannibalization of less ironic ''teen in peril'' horror formulas. That this canny carny act, directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, marks the end of the wiseacre, self- referential, ''disappearing up their own butts'' cycle of youth- market movies, one can only pray. more

The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human (1999)
Starring: MacKenzie Astin, Carmen Electra
Director: Jeff Abugov
Synopsis: An alien observes human courtship rituals from the first meeting to the first child, botching up his observations along the way. Mockumentary yields only a few laughs; best left for very forgiving comedy enthusiasts, anthropology students.
Runtime: 87 minutes
MPAA Rating: R
Genre: Comedy

Reviews:
By Boxoffice.com (Susan Green)
David Hyde Pierce's droll observations seem to belong to another movie altogether, although he's ostensibly narrating this not-quite a mockumentary by Jeff Abugov. "Mating Habits" stars Carmen Electra, generally dressed like a hooker, as the girl of Mackenzie Astin's dreams. She's supposedly "in computers"; he owns an accounting business. Neither occupation is even remotely credible for the vapid pair, who radiate zero chemistry after meeting cute in a disco. more

By Film.com (Henry Cabot Beck)
Lenny Bruce used to joke that he wanted to write a subversive sexual manual that would ruin, rather than improve, a person's chances by giving out a lot of bad instructions. In a way, The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human is similarly subversive, not just because it may be one of the worst relationship pictures ever seen, a movie about dating that is practically guaranteed to ruin any date, but also because as a comedy it is aggressively unfunny. more
