What
is Oobu Joobu? I have no idea, because I'm a rather new fan. All I know
is it was a Beatle related radio program. Could you tell me a bit more?
"Oobu Joobu" was a radio talk show with music and interviews
that premiered on Westwood One Radio Networks. The one hour weekly radio
program ran for 13 weeks, having its debut program on Memorial Day 1995
and its finale on Labor Day 1995. It was a program created, directed,
and presented by Paul McCartney.
From information found on the web, the name "oobu joobu" is a
reference to a BBC production of Al Jarry's play, "Ubu Cocu",
which Paul heard on the radio over 30 years ago. Paul got his idea for
the radio program in 1981, but never found the time to put it together
until recently.
During each of the one hour spots, Paul would showcase unreleased songs,
play rehearsal outtakes, chat with guest artists, play favorite
selections of music from his own personal record collection, tell
personal stories relating to the Beatles, and include one of Linda's
vegetarian recipes.
When Paul released his Flaming Pie recently, the 2 hour debut Oobu Joobu
program was offered on CD. There are many bootleg copies of the
remaining program available for purchase.
What
is the REAL reason Pete Best was kicked out of the Beatles? What are
your writers' opinions on this?
Pete
Best was the original drummer with the Beatles, but in August 1962 he
was abruptly fired from the group, with Ringo Starr hired as his
replacement. The truth has never come out about the REAL reason Pete
Best was kicked out of the group. It has been a mystery for over 30
years, and the Beatles lips have remained sealed on the matter.
What is my opinion on the subject? I think that there were two main
reasons why the Beatles wanted Pete out of the group. In the early 60's,
it is a well documented fact that Pete was regarded as the most handsome
and popular Beatle. It was Pete who the girls waited outside for and
screamed most loudly at. At one time, Pete Best was given top billing in
an advertisement for a Beatles club date, referring to them as
"Pete Best & the Beatles", which didn't sit too well with
the others. I certainly think there was some jealousy involved here: of
the attention that Pete received, and of Pete's good looks. Most likely,
Paul wanted him out. The balance of power in this group was always
ultimately between John and Paul, and a third person would be in the
way.
Another reason could be because of the influence Pete Best's mother had
on the group. Mona, or "Mo" was very involved with promoting
the Beatles in the early years while her son was a member. She owned her
own club, the Casbah, where rock & roll groups performed. Mo booked
many of the gigs that gave the Beatles notoriety. She often lent them
cash and helped them in many other ways. It is my opinion that John,
Paul, and George felt Mona wanted to have a part in continuing to manage
them, even after Brian Epstein had been hired. This is something they
didn't want. They could make a "clean break" of her and her
interference would be terminated if Pete was no longer a part of the
group.
The strangest and most disturbing part of this all is found in the book,
"Beatle! The Pete Best Story", by Pete Best and Patrick
Doncaster. Pete says that day in August 1962 was the last time any of
the Beatles ever spoke to him. Pete says, "I saw the Beatles by
chance only 2 or 3 times after the split. We never acknowledged each
other or exchanged a word."
Does anyone else find this odd??????? Perhaps some day the truth will
come out.......Remember, these are only my opinions. I hope I shed some
light on the subject for you, and I apologize if I offended any of you
"Paul lovers".
Are
any of the parents of the Beatles still living?
Both
of George Harrison's parents are deceased. Louise French Harrison died
from a brain tumor on July 7, 1970. Harold Hargreaves Harrison died in
May 1978 of emphysema.
Paul McCartney's parents are no longer living. Mary Mohin McCartney died
on October 31, 1956 from breast cancer. James McCartney died March 18,
1976. In his later years he was crippled by arthritis.
Both of John Lennon's parents are also deceased. Julia Stanley Lennon
died after being struck by a car on July 15, 1958. Alfred Lennon died of
stomach cancer in March 1976.
Ringo's birth parents are divorced. Last known info on Richard Starkey
stated that he is remarried, living in NW England, and is employed as a
window cleaner. I have never seen anything in print about Ringo's
mother, Elsie Graves, dying. However, in an interview in the early 90's,
Ringo mentioned briefly that his mother had died (supposedly around
1987). Elsie's second husband, Harry Graves (Ringo's stepdad), died in
1994.
I've
heard that none of the Beatles can read music. Is that really true?
I
was searching a webpage one day that had bootleg songs and there was a
Let It Be demo. The explanation that went with the demo was that Paul
was reading music off to the other Beatles since they didn't know how to
read it. So, really the only one who knew how to read notes was Paul.
John, George, and Ringo had a difficult time with it. I am not sure if
they can read music today, but during their earlier years, they could
not. Again, here is another interesting quote from Ringo in "Modern
Drummer" magazine: "John and Paul played alot of piano on the
Beatle records, because it gave a different quality than having a real
pianist. If we wanted a real pianist, then we would have had George
Martin, because he'd know where the actual notes were: we'd be
guessing."
What
made Ringo leave during the "White Album" session?
Well,
first of all, I'd like to say that there were many events leading up to
Ringo quitting the band at that time. Much of the following information
comes from the book "Beatlesongs".
Most of the time during the making of the White Album, Ringo would sit
in the corner and play cards with Neil Aspinall and Mal Evans.
Sometimes, Paul would dub in the drum tracks himself after Ringo had
left the studio for the day. Then when Ringo returned to the studio the
next day he would pretend not to notice what Paul had done, even though
he knew it was Paul who was drumming on the track. Ringo became very
upset one day when Paul criticized his drumming and decided to quit. It
is Paul you hear dubbing in the drum tracks on "Back in the U.S.S.R."
and "Dear Prudence".
Paul told the public he quit because he didn't think it was fun anymore.
But that wasn't it. Ringo thought he himself was playing terribly and
the other three were doing great. He had a feeling that no one loved
him. So he went on holiday to sort things out. When he returned to the
studio, his drumset was smothered in flowers - by the other Beatles.
Everything settled down after that and it ended up that the "White
Album" was Ringo's all time favorite record he made with the
Beatles.
What
about John's Aunt Mimi? Is she still alive?
John
Lennon's Aunt "Mimi", Mary Elizabeth Smith, was one of Julia
Lennon's four sisters. John went to live with Mimi at the age of 5, and
it was Mimi that bought John his first guitar. Mimi died on December 6,
1991 at the age of 88.
Did
Ringo really go into a coma once?
At
the age of 6, Ringo was taken to the Royal Children's Infirmary
suffering from acute abdominal pains. He had a ruptured appendix and
inflamed peritoneum. He went into a coma for 2 months.
What
does "Ob La Di Ob La Da" mean? I have been trying to figure
this out for a few years. These words also come up in Savoy Truffle.
The
following info was found in the book, "A Hard Day's Write", by
Steve Turner. It should answer your question. "Paul first heard the
words 'Ob La Di Ob La Da' uttered by Nigerian conga player Jimmy Scott,
whom he met at the Bag o' Nails club in Soho, London. Scott was renowned
for his catchy phrases. He was from the Yoruba tribe and if you find
someone from the Yoruba, they will tell you that 'Ob La Di Ob La Da'
means "life goes on". The fact that Paul used this catchy
phrase became a matter of controversy. Jimmy wanted a cut of the
profits. Paul told Playboy in 1984, 'Come on Jimmy, it's just an
expression. If you'd written the song, you could have had the cut.'
Jimmy Scott played congas on the session, the only time he worked with
the Beatles. Scott was arrested on charges of failing to pay alimony. He
asked Paul if he would foot the huge legal bill. This Paul did, on
condition that Scott drop the case against him over the song."
What's
Ringo's middle name?
Ringo's
birth name is Richard Starkey. He has no middle name.
I've
always wondered what is "bowakawa, pousse, pousse." What
language is this? What does it mean?
According to John, from The Lost Lennon Tapes, it was
in one of his dreams. In the dream, it was two girls who whispered that
phrase into his ear. He didn't know what it meant either. He just liked
the way it sounded. Sorry, you aren't going to find any hidden meanings
or odd translations here!
How
does the song, "Sexy Sadie" relate to the Maharishi?
There is a good deal of information in the book, "A Hard Day's
Write" about this subject. "John's honeymoon period with the
Maharishi didn't last long. By the end of his stay in India, he had
rejected the guru's leadership and channelled his feelings of
disappointment into 'Sexy Sadie'." John knew he could never call
the song "Maharishi", for fear of a libel suit against him.
Two of the reasons the Beatles were disenchanted with the Maharishi and
decided to leave India were: they were told that the Maharishi was just
after their money, and the other was a rumor that the Maharishi was
making sexual advances to one of the females there. The Beatles met
privately with him and told him they were all leaving. He wanted to know
why. John's reply to this (in his straightforward, outspoken way) was,
"Well, if you're so cosmic, you'll know why!"
How
tall was John Lennon?
John,
as well as Paul and George were 5' 11". Ringo is 5' 8".
Has
anyone seen a somewhat recent picture of or heard anything about Dhani
Harrison?
When were Paul's kids born?
What are all the Beatles kids doing today?
How many children of the Beatles are there? What are their names and
ages?
Julian
Lennon, born 4/8/63 has been living in Monaco the past 2 years working
on a theme restaurant in San Francisco, which will be called, "The
Revolution". After a 5 year absence, he is back in the recording
studio and hopes to have a single released by the end of this year.
John's other son Sean Ono Lennon was born 10/9/75. In 1995, he had his
own band, The Pits, and presently is in a band called IMA. He sings and
plays lead guitar, and is sometimes joined by Yoko.
Heather McCartney, born 12/31/63, is Paul's adopted daughter. Heather
keeps a low profile and has had jobs ranging from a darkroom technician
to a barmaid. She is presently a potter. Mary McCartney, born 8/29/69
works in the offices of a music publisher. She is a photographer for MPL.
Stella McCartney, born 9/03/71, graduated in 1995 as a fashion designer
from St. Martin's School of Art in London. She was featured in the
January 1997 issue of Harpers Bazaar. James Louis McCartney, born
9/12/77, played a small guitar solo in "Heaven on a Sunday",
on Paul's Flaming Pie. There's a small picture of James on the page with
liner notes. If you happen to have the McCartney Town Hall Meeting
taped, you can see James there in the audience. He has long blond hair
in a ponytail, wearing a black t-shirt, and is shown several times.
Dhani Harrison was born 8/01/78. Information on Dhani is hard to find,
as George has kept his life private from the media. He is presently
attending Brown University in Rhode Island.
Zak Starkey, born 9/13/65, Zak is married to wife Sarah and has an 11
year old daughter, Tatia. He is a drummer and has toured with Joe Walsh,
Roger Daltrey, and his dad's All Starr Band. He is currently on tour
with the Who's Quadrophenia. Jason Starkey, born 8/19/67, is also a
drummer, but not as successful as brother Zak. He once commented
"Being Ringo's son is the biggest drag in my life". In 1987,
he was caught stealing a car stereo, and also answered to two drug
charges. He is presently drumming in two different bands. Lee Parkin
Starkey, born 11/11/70 was co-owner of "Planet Alice", a
boutique in LA. In 1995, Lee was rushed to a London Clinic for an
emergency operation to drain fluid from her brain. Ringo cancelled his
All Starr Band tour to be with her. Three weeks later she underwent
surgery for a tumor and received radiation treatments. Lee is a make-up
artist.
Does
George's son Dhani have a middle name? If so, what is it?
George's
son -- "Dhani" has no middle name according to various
sources. Dhani means -- "Wealthy Person".
Do
you know if Yoko and her daughter Kyoko were ever reunited? I never hear
anything about her. She's fully grown now and surely her father's
influence has waned.
When was Kyoko born?
Kyoko Cox is the daughter of Yoko and Tony Cox. Kyoko
was born August 8, 1963. Yoko revealed in an interview with the Observer
that she finally reconciled with Kyoko two years ago. Yoko would not say
where Kyoko was living but did reveal that Kyoko works as a teacher.
Whatever
happened to Jane Asher, Paul's longtime girlfriend? Is she still an
actress? Are she and Paul still friends?
Jane and Paul's 5 year romance came to an abrupt end when Jane arrived
home unexpectedly and found Paul with Francie Schwartz. Jane fell in
love with political cartoonist, Gerald Scarfe in the 70's and their
first child Kate was born in 1974. They had 2 more children and got
married in 1981. They live in Chelsea. Jane returned to tv acting and
has been seen in Brideshead Revisited, A Voyage Round My Father, and
Love is Old, Love is New, a drama about a couple obsessed with the 60's
which featured alot of Beatles music. She also was in an episode of
Tales of the Unexpected, and has been in the films, Runners and
Dreamchild. Jane is also an author and has written 10 books on
entertaining, dress costumes, and cake decorating. Jane met Paul again
in 1994 for the first time in over 20 years. Recently, Jane was pictured
covered in form-fitting chocolate, as part of an advertising campaign
for McVitie's. Jane owns a bakery in Chelsea, London. She is well known
for fantastic cake decorating and has been written up for this
occupation in several magazines I have seen.
When
was George Harrison's last record produced, and what was it called?
Other than the new release "Chants of
India" (composed w/ Ravi Shankar), George's last album was 'George
Harrison Live in Japan' which he made with Eric Clapton and the band in
1992.
What
happened to Martha, Paul's sheepdog? I assume she must have passed away
by now, but I would like to know how long she lived.
Paul's sheepdog Martha was born in 1966 and died of old age in 1982. She
lived 16 years.
Who
is Francie Schwartz? Did Jane Asher walk in on Paul and Francie in the
bedroom? I can't believe Paul would do that!!!
Francie Schwartz is an American girl born in Pennsylvania. She had been
an advertising copywriter in New York. Francie met Paul after she
submitted an idea to Apple about a movie script based on the life of a
violinist. In 1968, they began having an affair while Paul was already
engaged to Jane Asher. Yes, it is true that Jane returned home
unexpectedly and found Paul and Francie in bed, causing Jane to
immediately end her relationship with Paul. Schwartz also left Paul and
wrote a book called "Body Count".
What
is Helter-Skelter and what or who is Hare Krishna?
A helter-skelter is a special slide found at British fairgrounds or
amusement parks. However, convicted murderer Charles Manson interpreted
the Beatles' song to mean that a war between the races, and the
apocolypse was destined to happen, and he sent out his followers to
commit murders. John Lennon said that Manson read something into the
song that just wasn't there. "Helter-skelter" is defined in
Webster's dictionary as: hurried and confused; disorderly.
The Hare Krishnas are followers of a specific religious belief. There is
a misconception that the Krishna movement represents the Hindu religion.
However, Krishna consciousness is not a faith or religion that seeks to
defeat other faiths or religions. Rather, it is a cultural movement for
the entire human society. This cultural movement is especially meant to
educate people in how they can love God. Followers chant the maha-mantra
to cleanse their spiritual being. For some very interesting reading
about the Krishnas and their beliefs.
Does
George still have his estate in Hawaii? Last heard, he was selling it,
as he didn't like the locals walking by to access the beach in the area.
(His place is all cliff and his groundskeeper said he was only there
about every 14 months or so.)
Yes,
George still has a home in Hawaii. Kuppuqukua is the name of George's
home in the tiny town of Huna on the island of Maui.
Does
Ringo have an autobiography?
Ringo has not written an autobiography, however there is a decent
biography about Ringo that is called, Ringo Starr: Straight Man or
Joker? The author of it is Alan Clayson and it is easily found in major
bookstores such as Borders and Barnes & Noble.
What
was the date of Cynthia and John's breakup, and John and Yoko's wedding
day?
John and Cynthia's divorce was final on November 8, 1968. John and Yoko
were married in Gibralter on March 20, 1969.
When
did Paul's family begin to call him Paul instead of James? Did he
officially change his name to Paul McCartney or is the James part still
there?
Paul's complete birth name was and still is James Paul McCartney.
Both he and his younger brother, Peter Michael McCartney (Mike), were
called by their middle names since a very young age.
I
just bought the White Album, and I have some questions. In the song
Savoy Truffle, what is the second dessert mentioned? It sounds like it
is in a different language. Also, why did the Beatles write a song for
Mia Farrow? Did they know her?
The song Savoy Truffle was written about George's friend, Eric Clapton,
who has a real "sweet tooth". George wrote the song with Derek
Taylor, and used the names of flavors listed on the inside lid of a box
of "Good News" chocolates. The second one you hear mentioned
is "montelimart".
The Beatles wrote a song about Prudence Farrow, Mia's sister. Both
Prudence and Mia were in Rishikesh with the Maharishi before the Beatles
and their wives arrived. Prudence had a habit of staying in her room
meditating and wouldn't come out to join the others. John tried to
persuade her to come out and socialize. The task inspired him to write
"Dear Prudence".
What
was the Yesterday & Today butcher cover and why was it changed?
This album was issued on June 20, 1966. It was to cause a great
deal of controversy. The Beatles posed for the cover in Britain, wearing
white smocks, with props of slabs of meat, and heads and torsos of
dolls, which they placed on their laps and shoulders. This was the
original cover print for Yesterday & Today, and was known as the
"butcher" cover because of the meat and butcher smocks the
Beatles wore.
Once the album was released, Capitol Records was swarmed with
complaints. Only in America was the cover found to be shocking. Capitol
withdrew it and replaced it with a different picture: a shot of the
group posed around a travelling trunk. Some of the recalled albums had
the cover removed and the new one pasted on, however, some employees did
not remove the original cover. They just pasted the new one on top of
the offensive one. Years later, fans found out they were able to peel
the cover off and reveal the original "butcher" cover. These
"butcher" sleeves are now collector's items.
The album reached #1 in America, but Capitol Records said it was the
only Beatle album to lose money because of the costs for changing the
cover and replacing old promotional material with new.
What
made Mark Chapman kill John?
What was the motive behind Chapman's killing of John Lennon?
Where was John shot? What was the killer's motive?
What was the official cause of death in John's murder?
On December 8, 1980, John was shot and killed in front of the
Dakota apartment building in which he and Yoko lived in. At
approximately 10:49 PM, the killer, Mark Chapman pumped 5 bullets from a
38 caliber revolver into John's arm and back. John died from massive
loss of blood. Chapman changed his plea of not guilty to guilty, and was
sentenced to a prison term of 20 years to life. He is presently serving
that term in Attica State Prison as prisoner #81A3860. Since Chapman
pleaded guilty, there was no trial. As to the motive why he gunned down
Lennon, there have been many theories. One being that Chapman thought
that he himself was Lennon, and after Lennon died, he would take on the
fame of his idol. Another was that "voices told him to kill".
Another was that he was just some "lone nut". Still another
was that Chapman was involved in a conspiracy theory with the CIA to
kill Lennon because of his political subversions.
Where
is the house on Blue Jay Way that George rented?
Blue Jay Way is a street located in the
Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles. You can get there by driving on Sunset
Boulevard and turning north onto Doheny. The roads are narrow and
winding, and the views are beautiful. I don't know the exact address of
the home George rented on this street, however while surfing the net, I
found a webpage all about Blue Jay Way, exactly how to get there, and
what the area looks like. Beware: the pages are loaded with pictures, so
it takes a very long time to download.
Did
John have a funeral? If so, did any of the remaining Beatles attend? And
was it true that he was cremated against his own wishes?
There
was no funeral for John. John was shot on December 8, 1980, and was
cremated December 10, 1980 at Hartsdale Crematorium in New York City.
Yes, it is true that John did not believe in cremation and did not want
to be cremated after his death. I have read several quotes by John
stating this fact. Yoko, however, feared that Lennon-obsessed fans would
disturb and possibly dig up his burial site, thus the decision for
cremation was made.
Is
George's first wife Patti still married to Eric Clapton?
No,
Patti is divorced from Eric. Patti Boyd Harrison and Eric Clapton
married on March 27, 1979 at the Apostolic Assembly of Faith in Jesus
Christ in Tucson, Arizona. The marriage ceremony was conducted in
Spanish. Eric booked 5 different churches for that day to ensure
privacy.
By 1984, Patti had moved out by the time Eric returned from his tour of
Hong Kong and Australia. While separated, Eric became the father of a
son, Connor, by Lori Del Santo in 1985. (Connor died in a fall from a
Manhattan high-rise at the age of four. Clapton's "Tears In
Heaven" was written as a tribute to his son.) Patti and Eric
divorced in 1989.
Patti is working as a photographer in London and is dating a real estate
developer. It is reported that she, Eric, and George remain friends.
Are
any of John Lennon's aunt's still alive? I know that John's mother Julia
had some sisters (Mimi deceased). What about the others?
Julia
Lennon had four sisters; Mary Elizabeth (Mimi), Elizabeth (Mater), Anne
Georgina (Nanny), and Harriet (Harrie).
Mimi never had any children of her own, saying she'd had enough of
looking after all her younger sisters when she was growing up. However,
she insisted John come live with her . Mimi died in 1991.
Elizabeth preferred being called "Mater" instead of
"Mummy". She had one son named Stanley. John often visited
Mater at her home in Scotland. She died in 1974.
Anne Georgina was a career woman. She was a civil servant and didn't
marry until her mid thirties. She had one son, Michael. (As of 1988, she
was still alive according to the book "John Lennon, My
Brother", written by Julia Baird, John's half-sister.)
Harriet caused some eyebrows to be raised when she went off to Cairo as
the bride of an Egyptian, who was a student at Liverpool University. Her
husband Ali, died suddenly after a tooth extraction. She returned to
Liverpool with daughter Leila. Years later she remarried and had a son
David. Harriet died in 1972.
When
did George Martin get knighted and why?
Beatles
producer George Martin was knighted in June of 1996 (15th?). He was one
of 1,041 notables from the entertainment, sporting, cultural and
political fields named on Queen Elizabeth's birthday honours list. The
list was drawn up by Prime Minister John Major's office on behalf of the
queen. In an interview on Sky TV, Martin said: "My first reaction
when I heard about it was one of astonishment. I had no idea...."
Martin added that he was, of course, very pleased saying that he was
"knocked out.
Are
either of John's two books still in print and if so, where can I find
them?
The
last printings of John's two books, In His Own Write and A Spaniard in
the Works, was I believe in 1988. I have seen both of these books on the
shelf of the Borders Books & Music store in the area in which I
live. I assume other major bookstores would have them too. The price of
the books is $25.00 each. Earlier printings are hard to find. However,
the following website may be of interest to any of you fans trying to
locate a hard to find Beatles book. At http://www.amazon.com
there are discounts on many Beatle books and they will also try to
locate out of print books for you.
I
have looked in books and can't find out if the Beatles have siblings. I
do know that Paul has a brother Mike and a stepsister (but I don't know
her name).
Paul
McCartney has a younger brother Michael, and a younger stepsister Ruth.
Ruth Williams at age 5 took on the surname McCartney after her widowed
34 year old mother Angela married Paul's 62 year old father Jim
McCartney.
George Harrison has three older siblings, brothers Harold Jr. (Harry)
and Peter, and sister Louise.
Ringo is an only child and has no siblings.
John Lennon has three half-sisters. Victoria Elizabeth Williams was an
illegitimate child and was adopted by a Norwegian captain and his wife.
No one has ever heard from them again. Julia Dykins Baird and Jacqui
Dykins are also half-sisters of John.
What
type of guitars did Paul use on Flaming Pie?
Paul
mostly played his Hofner bass throughout the making of the album. Paul
says he especially likes this bass because it is lightweight, made of
balsa wood, and he can move around freely with it, unlike other heavier
guitars. However, on The Song We Were Singing, Paul plays a Bill Black
doublebass. If you don't know who Bill Black was, he was the bass player
for Elvis. Paul's wife Linda bought that doublebass for him several
years ago as a birthday gift. The unusual thing is that it is a
right-handed bass, but Paul gave it a try anyways.
What
is LIPA?
LIPA
is an abbreviation for the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. The
idea for the school originated in 1989. Paul McCartney wanted to see a
future for his old school, The Liverpool Institute High School, which
had closed because of its rundown condition. Paul, along with the
Liverpool City Council and Schools for Performing Arts Trust all were
involved in its creation. Paul is the leading patron of the school;
other patrons include George Martin, Mark Knopfler, Carly Simon, and
Dudley Moore. The school officially opened January 8, 1996. The address
is: LIPA, Mount Street, Liverpool, L1 9HF, United Kingdom.
Paul
in his "Good Morning America" interview mentioned something
about telling James he would have to listen to him if James were in his
"masters class". Is Paul teaching a class somewhere?
Earlier
this year, Paul returned to LIPA and met with a group of students for a
master class. This was not a songwriting class. Paul is not on the staff
at the school, but occasionally likes to make an appearance. Paul said
that he enjoyed kicking around some creative and innovative ideas for a
student project. This is probably what he was referring to in the
interview.
Is
the Queen of England the same one now that was queen during the Beatles'
time?
Yes, it is the same queen. Queen Elizabeth II of Britain was crowned in
Westminster Abbey in London on June 2, 1953. She ascended the throne
following the death of her father, King George VI. Queen Elizabeth is
married to Prince Philip. The Queen has four children: Prince Charles,
Prince Andrew, Prince Edward, and Princess Anne.
I
read somewhere that one of Joan Collins' husbands had something to do
with the Beatles. Is that true?
Yes,
it's true. Ron Kass at the age of 33 was appointed Divisional Head of
Apple Records. Kass travelled and arranged various deals for the label.
He also set up an Apple office in California. In 1968, he was fired by
Allen Klein. Kass then became the head of Warner Bros Records in London.
When his wife Joan Collins went to America to star in
"Dynasty" in 1984, the couple separated , then divorced. Ron
Kass died of cancer in 1986. He was 51 years old.
Who
was the first artist ever signed to Apple?
The
first artist signed to Apple was Mary Hopkin, followed by Jackie Lomax.
They both had songs released in late summer of 1968.
The first American to be signed to Apple was James Taylor. James Taylor
was discovered by Peter Asher (brother of Jane) and was signed to Apple
in 1968. James Taylor however, left the label in 1969 and signed with
the Warner Bros label. Taylor cited lack of promotion of his records as
his reason for leaving. Too bad for Apple, because Taylor immediately
became a hit with "Sweet Baby James" and "Fire &
Rain" and was a major success in the 70's.
The
Fab 4 had visited Graceland and met with "the King" in the
60's. It is rumored that they recorded a couple of tunes together. Are
the rumors true? If so, where are the tapes?
The
Beatles never visited Elvis at Graceland because of security reasons,
however they did get together with "the King" on the evening
of August 27, 1965 at Elvis's California home, located at 565 Perugia
Way, Bel Air. The Beatles were accompanied by Brian Epstein, Mal Evans,
Neil Aspinall, and Tony Barrow. Priscilla Presley was also in
attendance. During the evening, Elvis suggested they sing and play some
music together. The jam session lasted for an hour. Paul later stated
that the jam session was recorded, but George denied that any recording
was ever made. If in fact a recording was made, only the heirs of Elvis
would know.
What
was the Beatles #1 song in 1968? I made a bet and need to know for
"winners" sake.

were:
In the UK: 3/30/68 #1 single Lady Madonna

weeks)
12/28/68 #1 LP The Beatles (White Album)
Did
Ringo's ex-wife really die sometime ago? Where, when, why?
I was just wondering what happened to
Maureen (Ringo's ex) after they divorced. Did she remarry?
Maureen and Ringo were divorced on July 17, 1975. In 1989, Maureen
married millionaire Isaac Tigrett, founder of the Hard Rock Cafe.
Maureen was diagnosed with leukemia and died December 30, 1994 at the
age of 48 of complications from a bone marrow transplant. She and Ringo
had 3 children together; Zak, Jason, and Lee.
What
was the quote John said about living past 40 before he was killed?
" I don't intend to be a
performing flea anymore. I was the dreamweaver, but although I'll be
around I don't intend to be running at 20,000 miles an hour trying to
prove myself. I don't want to die at 40." - John
I
read in a magazine that Paul is really right handed and that he played
the bass left handed as a result of cleaning it upside down. Is this
true?
Paul is left handed and many sources have supported that. For example,
if you see old Beatle converage on video and see Paul sign an autograph,
he signs it with his left hand. Here's some history about it: When he
was fourteen, he wanted a guitar. His father got him one, and Paul tried
to play it. However, when he played it, it didn't sound quite right;
something was wrong with it. Then he figured that the guitar was
sounding strange because he was left handed. So he went back to the shop
where the guitar was bought and got it altered. Then it sounded the way
it should have.
Can
you tell me some of the "hidden messages" in Beatles records?
Hidden
messages? Ok, there is one on Free As A Bird. Supposedly if you play if
backwards near then end of the song, you can hear Paul say "Looks
like it turned out nicely after all." Between the end of the song
I'm So Tired and the beginning of Blackbird, John says some words that
aren't very clear. But if you play them backwards, they sound like,
"Paul is dead, man, miss him, miss him." In the song Come
Together, John in the beginning of the song is saying "Shoot
me!" But as Geoff Emerick points out: that the bass guitar note
lands right where the 'me' is. Near the end of Strawberry Fields
Forever, John is heard saying something that sounds like "I buried
Paul." But actually he's saying "Cranberry sauce." I Am
The Walrus also has one as well near the end. The Shakespearean actors
that are talking at the end, one of them says, "What, is he
dead?", "Bury my body", and "O, untimely
death". One that is really obvious is the backwards music in Rain,
but that's just John singing "Rain, when the rain comes they run
and hide their heads."
What
was the first Beatle album released in the US? What is its value?
The
album, Introducing the Beatles, was the only Beatle LP available for
purchase in the US in late 1963. It is now one of the most valuable and
rare records. This album has been counterfeited numerous times, so you
must check ALL categories to see if you have that original LP.
The ORIGINAL, Introducing the Beatles VeeJayLP-1062, is a monaural copy
released 7/22/63. The disc has a black label with a colorband and oval
logo. It MUST include the songs Love Me Do & PS I Love You. The back
cover of the LP has 25 color photo ads of other VeeJay LP's. It must
have the words "printed in USA" at the lower left front cover.
Price ranges from $200 to $2,000.
The stereo copy of this LP is worth much more. It must also include the
above description, plus have "stereophonic" in gray print
across a white banner on the front cover. It is worth from $500 to
$6,500.
OK,
I'm really confused. People say that Abbey Road was the last album, but
it was released in 1969. But if Let It Be was released in 1970... agh!
Confused! Please explain!
The
LP Let It Be was an album that was recorded before Abbey Road was. Let
It Be was the last album released though, so you can say that Abbey Road
was the last album that the Beatles recorded on together, even though it
was released before Let It Be.
Who
is "Little Nicola" in the movie Magical Mystery Tour, and why
was she with the Beatles?
Little
Nicola was just one of the characters on the MMT coach bus. The bus has
many people; circus performers, dwarfs, and ordinary people. Nicola was
a little girl who John had sitting on his lap, playing a game, and
blowing up a balloon. She had just a minor role in the film, and really
didn't have anything to do with the Beatles. The part was played by 5
year old Nicola Hale.
John
was cremated when he died because Yoko feared fans would dig him up.
Where are his ashes now?
The
other reason is so his grave wouldn't become like Morrison's....if
you've been there, you know what I mean. (even if you've just seen a
picture- the statue isn't there anymore- the French government refused
to replace it after the last time it was stolen) John himself didn't
believe in the idea of making saints of dead musicians. "They died
so we might rock? Bullsh*t." Last I heard, the ashes were buried
"Somewhere in England"- an undisclosed location, possibly near
his and Yoko's first child. No, he is not under Yoko's bed. That's a
filthy rumour that's floated around for too many years.
Do
the Beatles still have their Sgt. Pepper outfits? If they don't, do you
know where they are?
I
know that John's is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland,
because I've seen it, and I think Ringo's was destroyed in a fire along
with other Beatles memorabilia at his rented bungalow on Haslam Terrace
in LA. I read an interview from a book where Paul was referring to his
Beatle days, and he says he still has his suit. I think George still has
his as well, except he never seemed to mention it after his Beatle days
(I think he still has his hat as well).
Does
Kyoko, Julian, or Sean have any kids?
Neither
Julian nor Sean is married, nor do they have any children. Sean is,
however, dating Ms. Yuka Hoda, of the band "Cibo Matto". She
will also appear on his upcoming album, with the working title of
"Photosynthesis". As I have said, not much is made public
about Kyoko, she is a very private person.
What
is ISKCON?
ISKCON is an acronym for
"International Society for Krishna Consciousness" or the Hare
Krishna movement. ISKCON was established in 1966 in New York by Swami
Srila Prabhupada. His desire was to give the world knowledge of how to
re-establish one's relationship with Krishna through devotional service
and chanting.
In the late 60's George's new belief in Krishna was an overwhelming part
of his life and he did whatever he could to help promote the temple or
Swami Prabhupada. George remained a devotee, but did not become an
actual member of ISKCON. George instructed Apple to back ISKCON by
leasing a building in which to house a temple. As George's involvement
with the temple grew, he invited many of its devotees to record for
Apple. The group was officially signed to Apple records and promoted
under the name Radha Krishna Temple. Prabhupada was in the process of
printing "Krishna: The Supreme Personality of Godhead" after
10 years of work, but was short on funds and asked George for the money.
Arrangements were made through Apple to pay the printing fee of $19,000.
By 1973, the temple was no longer suitable, and George agreed to finance
another house.
Since Prabhupada's death in 1977, George has been harassed by devotees
asking for money for trivial things. ISKCON has also used George's name
to market projects he had nothing to do with. It seems that George,
because of his celebrity status, is still being taken advantage of by
this organization because of his past generosity.
What
does the phrase "Jai Guru Deva Om" mean?
When the Beatles were studying with Maharishi
Mahesh Yogi, they were studying the art of yoga - karmayoga (the
practice of action), jnanayoga (the practice of knowledge), bhaktiyoga
(the practice of devotion), and rajayoga (the practice of renunciation)
- as a path to realizing the inner, living God. "Jai Guru Deva Om"
refers to that inner, living God within every person. Jai = Hail or
Praise, Guru = knowledge-giver but in this frame of reference it means
the giver of the Ultimate Knowledge (which is that realization of God),
Deva = God (not Angel), and Om is a holy word because it symbolizes the
first sound of the universe. This relates to the entire song Across the
Universe because that song is about meditation - specifically the Hindu
method of meditation upon the inner, living God (which is directly
related to the art of yoga). By very closely scrutinizing that song for
an English paper, I have come to this conclusion and many agree with me.
"Across the Universe" refers to the universe of the inner
being. Through their studies during their sojourn in India, the Beatles
deeply assimilated the spiritual philosophies that have been the essence
of Indian culture for 5000 years. This assimilation is reflected in
their song. They were wholly aware of this meaning of "Jai Guru
Deva Om" and incorporated it in their song. Through fine uses of
imagery and figurative language, they exemplified their mastery in
poetry and spiritual-mindedness when they wrote this song.
